Asturias - 1939

Sailed March 7, 1939 Europe to Buenos Aires, Argentina

Paul S. Valasek Hallersarmy@aol.com

Here is a partial list of passengers embarking at ports of Southampton, Vigo, Lisbon and Montevideo heading towards Buenos Aires. Most passengers who are listed as Poles are most likely Polish Jews, but again, by definition of Nationality in the Immigrant world, they are listed as being Polish rather than Jewish. The names of the Italians are interesting as they are all listed as “artists.” Makes me wonder what type of art they were creating. I have included them here for just that reason.

As the sailing date is just short of 6 months from the start of World War II, we can only surmise they knew what was coming and left Europe while they could.

Aurigny - 1936

SS Aurigny - Belonging to the Compagnie des Chargeurs Reunis.

Single stack transatlantic steamship serving the South American trade. This list of passengers is extracted from a sailing in July 1936. Though the home port of the Aurigny was Havre, this voyage appears to have started in Gdynia, then on to Hamburg, Havre, La Coruna, Vigo, Casablanca, Rio de Janiero, Santos, and finally Buenos Aires. A total of 230 passengers traveled aboard which included 11 Argentinians, 1 - 1st Class, 1 - 2nd Class and 9 - 3rd Class as well as 218 foreigners to Argentina. This larger group included 16 - 1st Class, 2 - 2nd Class, and 200 - 3rd Class. Thee was one Clandestino (stowaway) who claimed Argentine citizenship and boarded at Casablanca.

Valdivia - 1929

The following are the names of more immigrants leaving Poland for South America in May 1929. All of these boarded the French ship Valdivia at Marseilles. An unusal choice of port for people coming out of Poland.

By the names, many appear to be Rusyn possibly western Ukrainian, but all claimed Poland as their nationality. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy of the manifest page or if you have additional information on any of these people.

Towns of birth, residence, or final destinations are NOT listed.

Neckar - Sep 1912

Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen

Neckar 1901-1927

by Paul S. Valasek

Named for the German River which flows through Heidelberg, this ship is the second of the NDL line to bear this name. Originally built in 1901, its capacity was 1st class, 148, 2nd class, 116, and steerage 2500. Later expanded in 1905 to hold 2nd class 369, third class, 217 and steerage, 2865, this ship had its maiden voyage April 5, 1901 to New York. Used as a troop transport for German troops of the Boxer Rebellion in China, the Neckar was later used by many Eastern European Immigrants. It was seized by the US government in June 1917 and renamed the Antigone, when it served as a US transport. Renamed the Potomac after World War I, it now served to bring many more Eastern European immigrants to North America starting in May 1921 sailing from Bremen and Danzig (Gdansk) to New York. In February 1927, the ship was sent to Baltimore for scrapping.

My great-grandfather Antoni Kostrubala arrived on this ship in Baltimore from Bremen only 2 weeks after this particular sailing which PolishRoots has listed for you. His wife and three sons (my grandfather), came to New York a year later, in 1913. The following names are from an original passenger list booklet for the sailing of the Neckar from Bremen to New York, September 26, 1912. Most likely, they are first and second class passengers. As many names are of non-Polish travelers, please take a look and share this page with any of your friends who may be looking for German, Czech, or Hungarian passengers.

Kronprinz - 1910

Following is a list of passengers' names for a sailing taken July 1910 from the German East Africa Line's offices in Naples, Italy to exotic locations as Port Said Egypt, Kilidini Kenya, Tanga, Zanzibar, Chinde, and Dar-es-Salam Tanzania, Beira and Quelimane, Mozambique. The ship was the "Kronprinz" in English, the Crown Prince, built in 1900 and later captured by the Portuguese during World War I, in 1916. Though most of the names are German or English, wherever a German immigrant traveled, usually a Pole was not far behind. Granted, the East Coast of Africa was not high on the list of Polish migration, but anything and everything is possible, and must be considered. I have also seen a surprising number of Polish names listed as crew members on German vessels which would be considered very normal, especially for those Poles in the Prussian partition near the Baltic.

If you are having problems visualizing this time frame and place, just watch the movie, African Queen to see exactly the circumstances which developed in this region in the early 20th Century. Some of the passengers are indeed doctors, poltical officers, and even nuns most likely to do missionary work.

Passenger List

Asturias - 1936

Here is a partial list of passengers embarking at Southampton heading towards Buenos Aires. Most passengers who are listed as Poles are most likely Polish Jews, but again, by definition of Nationality in the Immigrant world, they are listed as being Polish rather than Jewish.

Information extracted from the book: Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen 1857-1970 by Edwin Drechsel
