Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwow
This database is extracted from the book: W Obronie Lwowa i wschodnich Kresow - Polegli od 1-go Listopda 1918 Do 30-go Czerwca 1919 R. published in Lwow 1926, which translated is: In Defense of Lwow and the Eastern Borderlands - Those Who Died from 1 November 1918 to 30 June 1919
The list of 1670 graves is compiled in a chapter entitled:
List of Heroes Buried in the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwow
by Ludwika Bialoskorka
Who writes,
"In the chapter discussing the biographies of those who died from 1 November 1918 to 30 June 1919, information known to us is given on the final resting places of those buried outside the cemetery of the defenders of Lwow. Apart from this list, we have included, for the reader's information, a list of all graves located in the cemetery that hold the remains of the defenders of Lwow, both those who died during the period from 1 November 1918 to 30 June 1919, as well as of those who died of natural causes after that date, up to the point when this book went to press.
This list was drawn up on the basis of official records, in which, however, information is missing here and there on the date of death or position of the grave.
As in all military cemeteries, here, too, we find a whole series (about 138) of graves of unknown fallen heroes. We have marked these graves on the diagram with black triangles."
"On 21 March 1926, through the efforts of the Malopolska Citizens Guard, the exhumation took place of 121 bodies of defenders of Lwow who died on the field of battle from 1 November 1918 to 30 June 1919, as well as those who died of natural causes after that date to 1924 inclusive. The remains exhumed from the Janowski [Janow/Janowo/Janowa?] cemetery and vicinity of Lwow were buried in separate sections in the Cemetery of the Defenders of Lwow, and we are appending an additional list of surnames."
